The South Tyrolean Wipptal (valley) reaches as far as Franzensfeste in the south. Continuing the Eisacktal (valley) it reaches Brixen and Klausen and nearly the local capitol Bozen. Kastelruth is located on the low mountain range which accompanies the eastern part of the Eisacktal (valley). There you can enjoy a really varying active holiday. The possibilities range from horse riding to playing golf, paragliding, hiking, climbing as well as cycling and rafting.

In winter the numerous skiing areas invite you to go skiing, snowboarding, tobogganing and cross country skiing.

South Tyrol and above all the region around Kastelruth enable you to enjoy a huge variety of interesting excursions. Here are some possibilities:

Castle Tyrol
...is one of the most important castles in Tyrol and was built between 1140 and 1160 by the Earl of the Vinschgau who was called Earl of Tyrol in 1140. This castle is a must when you visit South Tyrol.

The Aichach ruins

...from the 12th century. Till 1741 the castle was owned by Kastelruth. The nearby Pflegerhof is also worth a visit especially because they produce and sell their own tea varieties and herbs.

The Hauenstein ruins
...are located below the Santern point. The castle was built by the gentlemen of Hauenstein in the 12th century. In the 15th and 16th century it was extended. You can easily reach this ruin from Seis on the nice hiking path number 8.

The Salegg ruin
...is not too far from the Hauenstein ruin in the Hauensteiner forest. You can only see some minor rests from the once proud castle but nevertheless it is worth a visit.

Castle Prösels
...was built between 1490 and 1520. It is a typical barrage of Emperor Maximilian I. The castle courtyard has a late Gothic freestanding castle chapel. You can visit the marvellous frescos and ornaments in the halls of the castle.

The Trostburg (castle)
... can alo be reached by foot via Tisens and Tagusens on the path number 1. The Trostburg (castle) is dramatically located castle above Waidbruck with halls worth seeing.

The Hexenstühle (rocks)
...are two strangely formed rocks in the shape of chairs. You can find them in the forest above Kastelruth. This place is not only unique because of its geological and prehistoric strangeness but it is also of unique beauty and a great viewpoint.

The gardens of castle Trauttmanssdorff
...are a wonderful trip for everyone who loves nature, plants and flowers. 60,000 bulbous plants like tulips, daffodils and grape hyacinths reflect the colours of spring. In the world of cactuses, in the palm garden, in the house of orchids and on the pond of water lilies you can admire many different kinds of plants.

Ötzi's story
...can be learnt about in the archaeological museum of South Tyrol. Many interesting models, pictures, reconstructions, videos and interactive multimedia stations give you a thrilling insight into the life of the iceman and into the early past of the southern alpine area.
